The mouse

That must be awful! I mean, I'm sure you can still use your mouse, but if your scroll wheel doesn't work, that could be a big pain in the you know what. Unfortunately, the wheel on your mouse is just like any other part of the mouse and it can stop working or start acting funny at any time. Whatever your situation, there are a few things you can do to get it back up and "wheeling" again!

The mouse you have may work differently for the type of computer you have, so first, I'll run through some suggestions for all of you Microsoft Windows users out there. Then a little later on in the tip, I'll go over some tricks that may help those of you who use a different type of computer (like a Mac, for example). Alright, let's check them out!

In any version of Windows, the first thing you need to look at is the Mouse Properties window. To get there, go to Start, Control Panel and then click on the Printers and Other Hardware link. From there, just click on the Mouse link. (If you're running a version older than XP, these directions may be a little different, but just look for the Mouse icon and click on it). The Mouse Properties box will then open.

Click on the Wheel tab and adjust the number of lines your mouse is able to scroll through at one time. Yours may be set too high and your mouse can't handle it. You can go up to 100, but it's best to keep the number kind of low. Mine is set to three lines at a time. Just change the number and keep trying your mouse until you find a number that fits your wheel better. When you think you've got it fixed, click Apply and OK. If that doesn't work, go back to the Wheel tab and select the option of "One screen at a time." (Older versions may say "One page at a time"). This may help slow your mouse down a little so it can work better for you. Click Apply and OK again to make all the changes.

If you're still having trouble with the wheel after that, you may want to try and adjust your mouse through the program you installed when you first got it. (That is, if your mouse is a non-Microsoft brand). For example, if you're using a Logitech mouse, it may be configured a little differently and you can use the software that came with it to fix it. Just load up the CD on your computer and look for the Mouse Settings. You can then go through the settings and adjust what needs to be done. They'll probably be similar to what I already explained up above.

If you're still having no luck, you'll want to make sure that your mouse drivers are up to date. If you're using old drivers or even an older version of the mouse software, you'll need to do some updates. For this information, the best place to look is in the manual that came with your mouse. If you can't find any update information there, you may want to try contacting the manufacturer of your mouse and see if they can send you the drivers and or software you need.

Now, if you're using a non-Microsoft Windows computer, the best thing to do is reinstall the software that came with your mouse. If that doesn't work, make sure you install the latest drivers for your operating system, which again, you can get from your mouse manual or by contacting the manufacturer of your mouse. That's the easiest thing to do when it comes to that!
All in all, if you're still having trouble with your mouse wheel after all of that, it's likely that your mouse is defective and you'll probably want to look into buying a new one in the near future. If you don't want to pay for a whole new one, you can try getting a replacement from the manufacturer, but I'm not promising you that will work. Mice aren't too expensive these days, but I understand that you have to do what you have to do. Either way, I hope you're able to get your mouse back up and running again. Here's to no more mouse problems.

If Windows XP seems to take forever to boot, try the following tip:

Open the registry and navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunction key.
Next, Double-click the Enable parameter and type Y and click OK.

Here is a 3 step process that will ensure your laptop to be functioning properly.
  1. Download Spyware Terminator from other computer - freeutility from http://www.spywareterminator.com/
  2. Copy the application on a USB stick drive/CD and transfer it to the infected laptop.
  3. Install and Run the Spyware Terminator. Press Scan-> Full Spyware Scan-> Start Scan Now. Wait a few minutes depending on the hard drive occupied space. Next check all the spyware/viruses/trojans found and press Remove Infections.
  4. At this point your internet connection should be restored and functioning so go to http://downloads.ewido.net/ewido_micro.exe and download the application.Run the online avg/ewido scanner and again remove any threads found.
  5. Right click on SpywareTerminator taskbar icon 1) Check for updates - to download the latest program definitions 2) Check on the HIPS(host intrusion prevention system) to enable further protection of all files. HIPS may require to do a full spyware scan.
Remark: If during the cleaning process computer suddenly stops or restarts, then you'll have to restart windows in safe mode and repeat the scanning.

CD-ROM Tips

What if your CD-ROM door doesn't open? Most CD-ROM's have a tiny pin hole on the front close by the door. You take a paper clip and bend it and stick it in the hole. If it opens your good to go. Sometimes the doors stick after a CD is inside they usually don't stick when empty. If you can't get the door open you have two options one take it in for servicing or replace it. CD-ROM's don't cost a lot so you could save money by just replacing it yourself.

What if your CD-ROM door gets knocked a jar? This is a tricky one sometimes you can take it apart and re-align it but many times its broken and needs to be replaced. You can take it into a service center and they can try and re-align it. Doors can be knocked ajar if we leave it open and somebody bumps it. So be careful and always close the door don't leave it sitting open.

What if a CD shatters inside the drive? Many times when it shatters the door can get stuck so you can try the paper clip trick. If not you may just need to take it apart or into service to remove the broken CD. CD's are known to sometimes not sit in the tray correctly anditr will jam and the door will not open. A technician can take them apart if you can't. If the CD inside is of value he can try to salvage it for you.

What if your favorite CD is scratched to the point it will not work? There is a product that can restore the CD somewhat so it is playable again. Its not 100% so if you use a CD all the time make a copy of it in case this very thing happens. Clean your CD's and handle them with care. If you purchase a CD and its scratched or not playable out of the box return it at once.

What if your favorite music CD spins but you cannot hear it? Well make sure your sound is functioning normally. Also, make sure your CD volume is not muted in your sound control properties. If that still does not work try it in another source and see if it plays. If it does check to make sure your audio cable on your CD-ROM is connected properly. Very unlikely that it will become loose on its own. Make sure you check out all your sound properties. Also make sure you have sound in CD games.

These are just some quick tips for maintaining your CD-ROM.

I hope this info is helpful.

Hidden File Sharing

Microsoft has note on how to disable files haring of some hidden shares that you may not need. This affects Windows XP Pro and Media Center Users. You need to ensure that software such as backup software does not use these shares, before disabling them.

Many security holes are exploited when Internet Explorer loads a renegade web page. Here are some security settings to help lock down your browser. Do this in addition to the security tips we list above. Always write down your original settings so you revert to them.

When Trend Micro security software finds malware on your computer that it cannot repair, it removes the malicious file from your computer to eliminate the danger and "quarantines" it on your departmental, college, or central OfficeScan management server. When this happens, Trend Micro alerts you with a pop-up window on your computer similar to this:

It is very important that you pay attention to this alert because the information about the action taken, as well as the quarantined file itself, are only retained for a relatively short period of time, depending on how your antivirus administrator configured your OfficeScan client and server. For example, the central OfficeScan servers only retain quarantined files for 30 days.

Keep in mind that files quarantined by Trend Micro are almost always malicious code -- and not Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, or other useful documents. In the rare instance that a Word or Excel file is infected with malware, Trend Micro typically repairs the file and leaves the clean file intact on your computer. It is extremely rare that a useful file will get quarantined.

Also, Trend Micro quarantining a file on your computer will be a very rare event if you follow good security practices. Prevention is still the best form of protection!

When a file is quarantined, it is moved to the server, renamed with a cryptic file name, and encrypted to render it benign. The new file name has no resemblance to the original file name on your computer, so you have to use the information in the pop-up window shown above, or the log files described below, to identify the file and determine if it is something you need to recover.

1. You should not count on recovering the file from the quarantine because the fact that it was quarantined normally means Trend Micro could not repair the file to remove the malicious code. If you tried to put the file back on your computer, it would just get quarantined again.
2. You will need to recover the file from your backups, which underscores the importance of backing up your data.
Log files

When Trend Micro detects malware, it records its action in a log file that you can view for up to 15 days after the event. To view the log file:

1. Move your mouse pointer to the blue OfficeScan symbol in the system-tray section of your taskbar (usually the lower right corner of your screen).

2. Press the right mouse button and select OfficeScan Main to get the OfficeScan client window.

3. Select the Log Report tab. Make sure View virus logs is checked and that the appropriate date range listed.

4. Press View Logs to review the information about the action taken by OfficeScan to deal with the malware threat.

The Log Maintenance section of the Log Report tab also indicates how long log entries are retained before OfficeScan deletes them. SIRT recommends setting this value to the maximum allowed of 15 days, which can be done by selecting the Options button.

The log information is also copied to your OfficeScan server, but those log entries are likewise only retained for a short period of time. For example, the central OfficeScan servers only retain log records for 90 days. Again, it is important that you act quickly to record the name of the quarantined file from the pop-up window warning from Trend Micro or from your local log file before it is deleted. However, if you do need to see an entry from the server logs, contact your IT support person or the IT Help Desk. The server logs can be searched using the name of your computer, its IP address, or its MAC address.
Keep in mind that Trend Micro only records events in the log file when it finds malware on your computer. If you view the virus log and find it empty, that does not mean Trend Micro is not working properly. It just means you are following good security practices by keeping your computer patched and not clicking on suspicious e-mail attachments or visiting malicious websites.

Files stored on a server

The process described above explains what happens when Trend Micro OfficeScan software finds malware on your desktop or laptop workstation. However, it is best from a security perspective to store important files on a supported server rather than your workstation. What happens, then, when a file stored on a server gets infected?

First of all, it is relatively rare for a file stored on a server to get infected. The vast majority of the files on a file server are actually created on, or otherwise pass through, a personal workstation before they are stored on the server, so the antivirus software running on the workstation normally catches the malware before the file ever makes it to the server.

Experience with Trend Micro software confirms this -- the number of malware instances detected on workstations is an order of magnitude higher than the number detected on servers.

Nonetheless, an infected file does occasionally find its way onto a server, servers are required to run antivirus software just like the workstations. The Trend Micro security software for servers running Microsoft Windows, Novell NetWare, or Linux is called Server Protect. It functions much like OfficeScan in that it detects and cleans or quarantines malware in real time before it ever reaches the hard drives, or catches it during a scheduled or manual scan.

Who gets notified when a server file is infected?

When ServerProtect detects malware, it logs the event and notifies the system administrator responsible for managing the antivirus software on the server, who is normally not the owner of the infected file. It is therefore critical that system administrators pay attention to the notifications and monitor the log files to determine if the owner of an infected file needs to be notified.

It should be standard procedure to notify the owner any time a file on a server is quarantined or otherwise made unavailable by the server's security software, since this is the only way the owner will know what happened to their file. Furthermore, the owner should be notified immediately so they have an opportunity to recover the file from backups that may only be retained for a short period of time. This once again underscores the importance of making sure your files are regularly and reliably.

Do you use a flash memory stick, sometimes called a 'thumb drive", to carry information between different computers? You can (and probably should) run your antiviral software on that drive. When you open your antivirus program of choice, select that drive as the location to scan. As always, make sure those virus definitions have been recently updated!

How anti-virus works

Anyone who has a PC has used, or at least heard of anti-virus. The war on viruses has gotten hot and heavy in the last two years or so. Anti-virus manufacturers have really got to be on their toes if they want to keep us protected. There is a lot more than scanning emails and downloads anymore to keep the nasties out. Today I'd like to take a moment to help explain what anti-virus actually does when it's scanning you system, and what it's looking for.

First off, we'll start with the basics. Anti-virus scans your email and downloads—but what is it looking for? There are two main types of scanning "Specific" and "Generic".

Your first line of defense are all those virus definitions, signatures, and updates that your anti-virus software is always downloading. They provide identifiable characteristics, or finger prints, for malicious code. This is what is meant by "Specific" scanning—your anti virus program takes all these updates and stores them in an internal database. The anti-virus then matches them against any new files being introduced to your system via email or file download for known threats.

Using virus definitions is great for known viruses, but new viruses are growing exponentially every year and it is possible to not have a definition in time to properly diagnose a dangerous line of code. Heuristic and sandboxing are "Generic" scanning methods. They are not perfected yet and can bring up some strange issues including system slowdown and incorrect diagnoses. Generic scanning is really in its infant stage and is used more in larger networks where a server can do all the scanning (not individual PCs). Antivirus companies use Generic scanning to construct new virus signatures and I feel that these methods will be more widely used by single users in the future.

Heuristic is a type of generic scanning that looks through the lines of code, not for exact matches to virus definitions, but for suspicious code. The anti-virus makes intelligent assumptions based on the scrutinized code. Basically this means that the anti-virus can try to determine whether or not a file has a virus in it by looking at how the file or program is constructed and acts. This isn't a perfect system, however, and can bring up some strange results. This is why some programs tell you to turn off your anti-virus before installing. This type of scanning isn't a perfected science, but on the bright side it is better to be safe then sorry.

Sandboxing is where an antivirus program will take suspicious code and run it in a Virtual Machine (secure from the rest of the system) in order to see exactly how the code works and what its purpose is.

Well that's a quick overview of how anti-virus works to protect our systems form infection. Hopefully, with the introduction of new technologies and methods, the threat of infection will be a remote and it might just discourage the writers of these malicious codes. As usual, I emphasize that anyone who has a PC should have anti-virus software installed to keep their system virus free.

Antivirus software

Antivirus software is software that is specifically designed to detect and prevent viruses. New viruses emerge quickly.
As a result, it requires an antivirus solution can be constantly updated with the latest virus signatures.
Antivirus firms race to be first to provide signature updates for each new virus. There are some kinds of antivirus software which are:
Kaspersky Antivirus
AVG Antivirus Professional
McAfee VirusScan 7.0
Norton Antivirus 2007
Avast! Home Edition Antivirus
Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic
Panda Antivirus 2007
Norman Antinirus

Win XP Tip, Rename Multiple Files A new, small, neat feature for win XP deals with renaming files. I personally have always wanted the OS to include a way to do a mass file renaming on a bunch of files. You can now rename multiple files at once in Win XP. Its real simple:
1. Select several files in Explorer, press F2 and rename one of those files to something else. All the selected files get renamed to the new file name (plus a number added to the end).
2. Thats it. Simple huh.I would recommend that you only have the files you want to rename in the directory your working in. I would also recommend that until you get used to this neat little trick that you save copies of the files in a safe location while your getting the hang of it.
Ever wonder what's going on behind that splash screen? Well, now you can find out!Right click My Computer, Properties, Advanced, Startup and Recovery, Edit. Edit BOOT.INI. Add "/SOS" right after "/fastdetect" with a space between. The line will look something like this:
multi(0) disk(0) rdisk(0) partition(1) \WINDOWS = "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /SOS. Then you're finished. The first part, multi(0)..... may not be the same on your machine. Upon restarting, the splash screen will be gone. It can be re-enabled by removing the new switch.

Other virus sources

Although e-mail viruses are by far the most common, you can still get infected in any number of other ways. In this last section of our virus guide, we'll look at keeping you safe from as many virus sources as possible.

--> Unknown download sites - Be careful when downloading software from the net, especially from a virtual shareware library. A virtual shareware library is a site that has software listings on it, but they don't keep the software on their server. Just hover your mouse pointer over the download link and look at the bottom of your browser. If the URL shown is not the same as the site's it's a virtual shareware library. Most shareware sites are.

This isn't to say that you're going to get a virus by downloading software from them. In fact, I've never had a problem (and I download tons of software).

What I normally do is try to go to the software's web page. If it seems to be a trustworthy company, I download. Then I double-check the file with my anti-virus software.

--> Floppy Disks - Passing around floppy disks use to be the number one way of getting a virus, but it isn't as common as it used to be. In general, just be careful about running programs on floppy disks, especially those from questionable sources.

Another thing to be careful of is floppy boot sector viruses. If you have an infected floppy with this type of virus on it, you'll be infected if you forget to take it out of your drive when you re-boot your computer. To avoid problems, just don't leave floppy disks in your drive.

Of course, it doesn't hurt to scan your floppy with your AV software either.

--> Macro Viruses - I had mentioned this briefly earlier. Be careful with MS office documents that come from questionable sources. They can contain what's called a macro virus. These can delete files, alter program menus, and more.

Unfortunately, these are relatively easy to write, so they are among the most widespread variety of viruses. Be extremely careful when opening unknown MS office files, especially Word documents. Probably a good idea to save these files to disk then check them with your anti-virus software before opening them.

Well, that's about it. I know we could easily fill a book discussing viruses, but I'm just tryign to pass along the basics.

Just remember, keep your anti-virus software up to date and don't run / open any files you don't trust 110%.

Basically, they all fall under the generally category of "viruses". However, there are a few distinctions.

Virus - Technically, a virus infects another file (attaches or inserts itself into it). They usually infect program files or MS Office documents. From there, it can replicate, do damage, etc. Unlike a worm, these do not function as a stand alone (except possibly to infect a given file).

Worm - This is almost identical to a "true virus", except that it lives on its own and generally doesn't infect other files (although it can replace them). Usually, these copy themselves using e-mail, networks, disks, etc. Again, these are very close to a true virus, and can do the same kind of damage.

Trojan Horse - This type of program doesn't copy itself but does do damage to your computer. These types of programs rely on people to pass them around and to run them. They do not e-mail themselves. The idea is to make the program look like it's something harmless, like a screen saver or joke, so it gets sent around.

That's the crash course on virus types. Bottom line, you don't want any of the little nastys on your computer!

Most e-mail viruses only exist to replicate themselves, kind of like a digital bacteria. Others may do damage to your computer's files or even make your hard drive inaccessible.
What can you do?
1. Don't open attachments if you're not expecting them - EVER. If you get an attachment, e-mail whoever it was that sent it to you to confirm it's not a virus. Checking it with your anti-virus software isn't a bad idea either. Next to good anti-virus software, this is the #1 way to keep your computer virus free. If you don't have any anti-virus software, get some. And keep it up to date.
2. If you have anti-virus software that's up to date, don't rely on it to stop every virus. New viruses (10-15) are created each and every day. No one had a defense when the ILOVEYOU virus first hit, but folks who didn't run the attachment got away unscathed. (Although Norton AV seems to have updates available within hours of a new virus discovery)
3. Finally, there is a slim chance that you may run across a virus that can infect your computer without it being run.

These viruses take advantage of a security holes in some e-mail clients, namely Outlook / Outlook Express (they can also infect you if it's on a web page viewed with MS Internet Explorer). These holes have been sealed through a patch you can get from Microsoft.

The lesson? Keep both Internet Explorer and Outlook / Outlook Express up to date. Updates are free, so there's no good reason not to keep your software current.

Remember, 99.99% of the viruses out there must be run by YOU in order to infect your computer. If you get a virus e-mailed to you, you're generally safe reading the body of the e-mail message, JUST DON'T RUN THE ATTACHMENT!! A virus can't infect your computer until you give it your consent (well, unless someone hacks into your machine and runs it, but that's another newsletter).

If you do get a file that you suspect contains a virus, just delete it.

Don't open attachments if you're not expecting them - EVER. If you get an attachment, e-mail whoever it was that sent it to you to confirm it's not a virus. Checking it with your anti-virus software isn't a bad idea either.

Next, some other ways to pick up a virus.

In its simplest form, a keylogger trojan is malicious, surreptitious software that monitors your keystrokes, logging them to a file and sending them off to remote attackers. Some keyloggers are sold as commercial software - the type a parent might use to record their children's online activities or a suspicious spouse might install to keep tabs on their partner.

Keyloggers may record all keystrokes, or they may be sophisticated enough to monitor for specific activity - like opening a web browser pointing to your online banking site. When the desired behavior is observed, the keylogger goes into record mode, capturing your login username and password.

Some sites attempt to thwart keyloggers by having the user respond to visual cues they must point to with their mouse instead of using their keyboard.
However, some keylogger trojans also capture screenshots, thereby negating the effect of this strategy. Keyloggers and other forms of remote-access trojans tend to be the most determined malware, taking extra steps to stealth its presence, including through the use of rootkits.

The best defense against keyloggers is prevention. One of the most common infection sources is peer-to-peer (P2P) filesharing networks, such as Kazaa, Morpheus, Gnutella, and dozens of others. Keyloggers are also commonly sent as email attachments and via links in instant messages that point to the infected file.

Too often, people are lulled into a false sense of security, believing, for example, that if they simply switch to a different browser they will be safe from harm. It's simply not so simple. To stay safe means becoming proactively engaged in your own security.

Basically, anything that is executable (able to run). You're generally safe with picture files, text files, and the like. However, it still pays to scan first.

Here is a (very) short list of the most common to watch out for:
exe
zip
scr
vbs
bat
com
pif
asp
doc
xls

Those are the most common. Please, please, I beg you, don't misinterpret this to mean that if you get one of these files it's automatically a virus. A ".zip" file may be nothing more than a set of compressed files your friend sent you to look at. A "doc" or "xls" file may simply be an MS Office file. It's just that these type of files could also be viruses.

A couple other virus tricks you need to be aware of. First, MS Office files can contain what are called "Macro Viruses". Without getting into too much detail, these files can run a "macro" (a macro is a mini-program run from within another program) that can be as destructive as any "regular" virus. So, my advice on MS Office attachments is not to open them unless you are expecting them. If they just show up, verify with the sender first.

The other trick you need to look out for is an extra extension added to an attached file. For example, you may have something like "mypicture.jpg.vbs". In fact, if you don't have your computer set to view file extensions, it may just look like "mypicture.jpg" and omit that last "vbs" part.
This may appear to be a jpg picture file, but it's actually a Visual Basic Script file. If executed, it will happily infect your computer with a virus.
So, be careful out there.

With even more of them viruses that threatened our computer, anti the virus was software that was obligatory install in our computer. Many choices anti the virus that could be used by us from that his price a sky to that Free. To not confused Chose whatever that was good, I will give the picture about several products anti the virus.
According to me Kaspersky was anti the best virus at this time.Kaspersky could know many viruses including the local Indonesian virus. That ought to be pointed out the thumb from from anti this virus was update him that was very fast. Moreover if we saw to his site will have newest virus information that was known each minute.
2. AVG
Could be considered to be AVG was antivirus one million groups, because because of the number that used him and of course free.AVG quite potent handled the local virus and the virus from outside.
AntiVir was antivirus that was moderate enough good, I myself used anti this virus.Several viruses that slipped off from antivirus other could be detected with antivirus this.
In fact this was antivirus that was competent enough, but unfortunately if I install McAfee webserver I who used Apache did not want the road.
The first time I had the computer, Norton was antirus first that was used by me, because really quite potent. But old Norton became very heavy, in fact exceeded the weight game. Guaranteed if RAM you only were barely adequate possibly the other application not memory part.
For the local virus affair, Norman in fact was enough OK, But unfortunately update him must be online, If not having the internet connection not his Norman's road.
Review this I in order to be based on my experience then, Possibly was in a relationship the view was different?

If You open windows explorer and search for all *.cpl files, You would see at least as many entries in search as You have in your control panel.Yes ! .cpl stands for control panel. If You do not want to navigate to any of your favorite entries, You can create a shortcut to that entry's corresponding cpl file.
Following lists control panel and cpl file names:
System Properties = sysdm.cpl
Network Connections = ncpa.cpl
ODBC Administrator = odbccp32.cpl
Display Properties = desk.cpl
Add or remove programs = appwiz.cpl
Internet Properties = Inetcpl.cpl
Game Controllers = joy.cpl
Phone and modem Options = telephon.cpl
Time and Date Properties = timedate.cpl
Region and Language Options = intl.cpl
Power Options = powercfg.cpl
Mouse Properties = main.cpl
Accessibility Options = access.cpl
Add Hardware Wizard = hdwwiz.cpl
Sound and Audio Devices = mmsys.cpl
User Accounts = nusrmgr.cpl
Speech Properties = sapi.cpl

Now if You want to add/delete any of these entries from panel You can do it through Registry or gpedit.msc or through tweakui if You have powertoys installed. It is preferable to use gpedit or TweakUi as its easier.

From TweakUi, You have to simply click on control panel , and select/deselect entries in right panel as per your choice.

From gpedit.msc (to run gpedit, goto START-RUN and type gpedit.msc) Navigate to User Configuration- Administrative Templates-Control Panel folder select and right click on Show only specified Control Panel Applets , click on enabled and Then click on the show. In this list You won't see anything if its your first time. Click on add and type the complete file name from above list. (This is a bit more complicated process specially if You are a new user of the tool) And if You are a registry fan, You can do this my navigating to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Control Panel\\] and adding a key field by the name "don't load" and one string value to each of the cpl file names. For example if You don't want to see accessibility options, add a string "access.cpl" on the right pane to the newly added key field "don't load". You can add as many strings You want.

When you right-click on a folder or a shortcut in the Start Menu, the context menu may not appear. Also, dragging and dropping of files and folders in the Start Menu may not work.
Resolution

To solve the problem, enable the Enable Dragging and Dropping Option in your Start menu properties. Follow these steps:

For Classic Start Menu
Right-click Taskbar, Properties, click Start Menu tab, choose Customize Enable Enable Dragging and Dropping.

For New Start Menu
Right-click Taskbar, Properties, click Start Menu tab, choose Customize Click Advanced tab and enable Enable Dragging and Dropping

If the option Enable Dragging and Dropping is not available, it's due to a policy setting. For stand-alone systems, try this:
-> Start Registry Editor and navigate to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
-> Backup the key to a file.( instructions )
-> In the right-pane, set No Change Start Menu value to 0.

Start Menu Pin list

The pinned list allows users to place shortcuts to programs and other items in the Start menu. A program (.exe file) or a shortcut to a program can be "pinned" to the Start menu by right-clicking the item and clicking Pin to Start Menu. Any other item can be added to the pinned list by dragging and dropping it to the Start button or the Start menu. An item can be removed from this list by right-clicking it and clicking Unpin from Start Menu or Remove from This List। The order of the items in this list can be arranged by dragging and dropping them to the preferred position.

Adding the Pin to Start Menu option for Folders

To add a folder to the Start Menu Pin list, you may use the drag-drop method as stated above. Here is another cool tip for you which allows you Pin a folder to Start Menu using the Context Menu। Follow these steps:
Click Start, Run and type Regedit.exe
Navigate to:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ Folder \ shellex \ ContextMenuHandlers
Create a sub-key named {a2a9545d-a0c2-42b4-9708-a0b2badd77c8}
Close Regedit.exe

Now, to Pin a folder to the Start Menu, press and hold the SHIFT key down, and then right-click a folder. The Pin to Start menu entry will appear in the Context Menu.

Note: To Undo the above, simply delete the key {a2a9545d-a0c2-42b4-9708-a0b2badd77c8} in the above location. It's always advisable to take a backup whenever you modify a key.

When you open the Task bar properties and switch to Start menu tab, the "Start menu" check box may not be available and you're forced to use the Classic Start menu। This is due to a policy setting, especially if your system is in a domain। Contact the network admin to relax this setting। For a standalone, try the following steps.

Using the Registry Editor

--> Open Registry Editor and navigate to:
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
--> In the right-pane, set NoSimpleStartMenu to 0 [dword:00000000]
--> Logoff and login again for the changes to take effect.

Using the Group Policy Editor - Windows XP Professional

--> Click Start, Run and type GPEDIT।MSC
--> Double-click User Configuration Administrative Templates
--> Click Start menu and Taskbar
--> Double-click Force classic Start Menu and set it to Not Configured

The Search companion in Windows XP searches for hidden and system files differently than in earlier versions of Windows. This guide describes how to search for hidden or system files in Windows XP.

Search for Hidden or System Files By default, the Search companion does not search for hidden or system files. Because of this, you may be unable to find files, even though they exist on the drive.

To search for hidden or system files in Windows XP:
Click Start, click Search, click All files and folders, and then click More advanced options.

Click to select the Search system folders and Search hidden files and folders check boxes.

NOTE: You do not need to configure your computer to show hidden files in the Folder Options dialog box in Windows Explorer to find files with either the hidden or system attributes, but you need to configure your computer not to hide protected operating system files to find files with both the hidden and system attributes. Search Companion shares the Hide protected operating system files option (which hides files with both the system and hidden attributes) with the Folder Options dialog box Windows Explorer.

You're in the final stretch of writing a massive document when you realize that a block of text, such as Company Confidential, needs to appear in the right margin of each page of your Word document. Learn how Word's Header and Text Box features make it easy to add this text to your documents.

When you need to display the same block of text (e.g., Company Confidential) on every page, you can place it in a header or footer. However, it becomes more complicated if you want to display the text in a specific section of the pages, such as the right margin or the middle of every page.

Microsoft Word's Header and Text Box features make this task quite simple. Follow these steps:
1. Go to View Header And Footer.
2. Click within the Header window, then go to Insert Text Box. Press [Esc] to remove the drawing canvas.
3. Click and drag the mouse pointer in the Header window to create the text box.
4. Click within the text box and enter the text.
5. Point to the text box border and right-click.
6. Select Format Text Box.
7. Click on the Layout tab and select In Front of text button and click OK.
8. Click and drag the text box border to the right margin where you want to display the text.
9. Click the Close button in the Header and Footer toolbar.

Now Company Confidential will appear in the right margin of every page in your document. If you need to make formatting changes to the text, you must first go to View Header And Footer. Then right-click the text box and select Format text box to make the necessary changes before closing the Header window. You must also open the Header window before you can delete the text box from the document.

You don't have to change the Browse Folders setting in Windows XP if you want to open a folder in a separate window. Here's how to change the setting on the fly with a simple keystroke combination.

Your Windows XP system probably has the Browse Folders setting configured to Open Each Folder In The Same Window in the Folder Options dialog box. However, sometimes you may wish to open a folder in a separate window. For example, you may want to have two windows open in order to use drag and drop to copy or move files from one folder to another.

For these cases, there's a little known keyboard trick that you can use to easily open a folder in a separate window without having to change the Browse Folders setting. Simply hold down [Ctrl] as you double-click the folder. When you do, the folder will open in a separate window.

Keep in mind that this tip only works in folder windows in which the Common Tasks pane is visible. If the Folders tree is showing, this tip won't work.

Note: This tip applies to both Windows XP Home and Windows XP Professional.

Windows XP's Clipboard is handy, but it has its limitations. Learn how you can extend Clipboard's capabilities with a utility called ClipMate.

When you cut, copy, and paste items from one place to another, you're relying on Windows XP's Clipboard to act as the intermediary, temporarily storing items as you copy and paste them. A drawback to this native system is that Clipboard can only store one item at a time.

One alternative to Clipboard that I find to be extremely useful is ClipMate. Since introducing ClipMate in 1991, Thornsoft Development has been transforming its tool into the ultimate Clipboard extender. With ClipMate, just about everything that you copy is added to its database-like clipboard, where it will stay until you delete it -- and you can quickly and easily paste those items over and over again. With the Virtual Collections feature, which shows you all the capture clips, all you have to do is select the one that you want and you can paste it anywhere.

You can download ClipMate and experiment with it using the 30-day free trial. If you decide to keep it, you can register the software for $34.95.

Note: This tip applies to both Windows XP Home and Windows XP Professional.

When you want to limit who can access your shared folders in Windows XP Pro, you can use the Net command line tool to hide your computer, and subsequently your shared folders, from other network users. Greg Shultz shows how to create a hidden share.

By sharing a folder in Windows XP Pro, it usually means that you want network users to be able to find and access the folder in the My Network Places tool. If you want to share a folder with only certain users, you can use the Net command line tool to essentially hide your computer and shared network folders.

Follow these steps to create the hidden share:
1. Open a command prompt.
2. Type this command: net config server /hidden:yes.
3. Share the folder as you normally would.

If your computer is already sharing network folders, it may take up to 30 minutes for this command to take effect and hide the computer name.

Users who have access to the hidden shared folder can get to it by using the UNC name or by mapping the hidden share to a local drive letter. To unhide the computer, type
net config server /hidden:no.

Note: This tip is for Windows XP Professional only.
