Choice of CPU: Because ordinary people do not know much about computers, they simply buy one that has an Intel processor. More discerning buyers get PCs with AMD processors. Benchmark tests by prominent computer magazines and websites have shown that AMD Athlon processors score over Intel Pentium processors. Unlike Intel CPUs, AMD processors natively support both 32-bit and 64-bit software. AMD processors consume less power and consequently generate less heat. Hence, they do not require huge noisy fans. AMD is also a much better consumer-friendly company. It has been contributing to the development of open standards, which results in cheaper PC components. Intel, on the contrary, had tried to impose proprietary products like the RD-RAM memory technology, which was developed by its subsidiary Rambus. The biggest argument for AMD processors is the cost. AMD CPUs are always cheaper than Intel's. Remember, it is always the consumer who ultimately pays for the advertising and marketing expenses.
Choice of Motherboard: Thanks to the HyperTransport technology developed by AMD, motherboards of their CPUs are at a level higher than than Intel motherboards. Intel motherboard still use the obsolete front-side bus (FSB) technology to provide a connection between the CPU and the RAM (memory) modules. In the AMD platform, the CPU has an integrated memory controller which directly accesses the memory modules. Hence, memory operations are not bottlenecked by the FSB. Also, motherboard chipsets for AMD processors are being made by many third-party vendors (like VIA, nVidia, and ATI) who add their own expertise and performance increments to the motherboards. Intel jealously guards the chipset market for their CPUs and hence all innovations have to come from Intel.
IDE Drives Setup: Most motherboards have to IDE connectors allowing you to connect up to four IDE devices (hard disks and CD/DVD drives). Each connector can connect to two IDE devices in a master/slave combination. If you have just two devices, say a hard disk and a CD drive, connect them separately to the two IDE connectors. If you have a CD drive and CD-RW drive, connect them both to an IDE connection with the CD writer as the master and the CD drive as the slave.
Autostart CDs: To prevent a CD from autostarting when it is inserted, hold down the Shift key until Windows Explorer recognises the disk. Use Xteq X-Setup or TweakUI to permanently disable autostart behavior for CD/DVD drives.
Power Supply and Cabinet: PC components like the CPU and the graphic card consume a lot of power. So, make sure your PC cabinet has a power supply rated at a minimum of 350W. Also, make sure the cabinet has provisions for two extra fans (one in the front and one in the back). The power supply comes with a fan, which also tries to takes some hot air off the CPU through a grill placed just above the CPU. This grill needs to properly spaced out, be big enough and ideally located to provide effective cooling. Almost all PC cabinets today support the ATX standard, which will allow software to shut the PC down. In Windows 9x/Me/2000/XP, select Enable hibernation under the Hibernate tab of the Power Options applet in Control Panel. A new Hibernate option will now be available in the Shutdown Windows menu.
COM Ports: If you use a serial mouse, then connect it to the COM1 port as this is the first port that the OS checks when it is looking for a mouse. You can connect your dialup modem to COM2.
CNR Port: This port (known as Audio Modem Riser or AMR in older motherboards) can be used to add a specially made low-cost peripheral replacement. The replacement is far cheaper than a separate sound card or modem.
Fans: If your cabinet allows it, install additional fans for extra cooling.
Dust: Remove dust regularly from the insides of your cabinet and prevent them from forming a coating over the motherboard and other parts.
Driver updates: Manufacturers of PC components release new driver updates to fix problems associated with their products. Check their websites for these releases and keep your machine updated.

Microsoft Windows XP usually shows icons for folders like My Music and My Pictures. If a folder contains pictures, Windows XP displays random thumbnails from within the folder. You can replace these icons with custom pictures to make browsing your files more fun, and to make it easier for children to find and open files.
Note: Your picture is visible only when you're browsing folders with the Thumbnails view. To access the Thumbnails view, click Thumbnails on the View menu.
To add a picture to a folder
1. In Windows Explorer (the program that appears when you open folders such as My Computer, My Documents, My Pictures, or My Music), right-click the folder you want to add a picture to, and then click Properties.

2. In the Properties dialog box, click the Customize tab. If there is no Customize tab, you cannot add a picture to that folder. You can add pictures to other folders, however.

3. On the Customize tab, click Choose Picture.

4. In the Browse dialog box, click the picture you want to use, and then click Open.

5. Click OK.

When you view the folder using Thumbnails view, Windows displays a thumbnail of the picture you selected.

Microsoft has a tool for people to see if your Windows XP-based PC can run Windows Vista: the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor RC.
This small software tool will scan your computer and create an easy-to-understand report of all known system, device, and program compatibility issues, and recommend ways to resolve them. Upgrade Advisor can also help you choose the edition of Windows Vista that best fits the way you want to use your computer.
Note: This software isn’t final, so the results you get may not be 100% accurate. Make sure you run Upgrade Advisor again in a few months for a more accurate assessment and to get the latest up-to-date information about whether your system is ready for an upgrade.
Before you begin
Before you run the Upgrade Advisor, be sure to plug in any USB or other attachable peripheral devices (such as printers, external hard drives, or scanners) that are regularly used with the PC that you're evaluating.

not too difficult, simply load into Vista and format the partition XP is currently installed on. Since the Vista bootloader has control of the boot, there is no need to modify the boot.ini of XP.
Restart your computer with either Vista CD 1 or your Vista DVD in the drive, if you don't you will be prompted to pick an operating system. Once into setup, choose repair console from the first screen (not install).
Now the last option is for a DOS prompt, pick that.
A DOS prompt appears, and type the following:
bootrec.exe /fixmbr
*this will essentially remove XP from the Vista bootloader
bootrec.exe /fixboot
*this will check that XP is no longer present in Vista's boot.ini
Restart and XP is history.

Antivirus software is software specifically created to identify and eliminate computer viruses and other malicious software. Antivirus software accomplishes this by using 2 different methods, it either scans files and folders on the target computer to look for known viruses, or it monitors the computer, looking for any suspicious activity from any computer program, and monitors ports on the computer.
Antivirus software has a dictionary with known viruses listed there, which is why it is important to update your software online as often as you can, as threats are identified every day. Once a file has been corrupted with a known virus, the antivirus software either attempts to repair the file by removing the virus form the program, quarantines the file so that a file that cannot be repaired is moved to a location in which the virus cannot spread or it will delete the infected file.
This is why antivirus software is especially important for businesses, it can be quite damaging to a company to have a important document infected and forced to delete it as to prevent further spreading of viruses. Certain antivirus software also scans for and removes adware, software installed onto your computer without you knowing while browsing the internet which sends information about the websites you visit to marketing companies, which will then target you for advertising and spam emails.
Millions of harmful software programs have been created targeting the unwary user, and this can leave your business or home vulnerable to prying eyes and unwanted frustration, antivirus software is the answer to all you problems, and the best part of it is that there are so many free antivirus software out there to get, you have no reason why not to be protected by one of them.

Never fear, help is on the way. While these shortcuts won't make your document shorter, they will help to ease the pain as you try to navigate—hopefully without the need for aspirin.
Let's begin with some basic keyboard shortcuts:
- Arrow keys = moves one space or line in the arrow direction.
- Ctrl + Left or Right arrow = moves the cursor one word left or right.
- Home = moves the cursor to the beginning of the current line.
- Ctrl + Home = moves the cursor to the top of the document.
- End = moves the cursor to the end of the current line.
- Ctrl + End = moves the cursor to the bottom of the document.
- Page Up = moves the cursor up the length of one screen.
- Page Down = moves the cursor down the length of one screen.
- Ctrl + Page Up = moves the cursor to the previous page in your document.
- Ctrl + Page Down = moves the cursor to the next page down in your document.
Now here are a few tidbits for document navigation with the mouse on the vertical scroll bar.
The first and easiest is to realize that when you click and hold on the scroll box a text box will appear which tells you what page you're scrolling to and the section title which begins the page. This is really helpful in a very long document—it keeps you from playing the guessing game about where you are with the scroll button. (It cuts down on the "Oops! I went too far" problem.)
Below the scroll bar, you'll find a series of three buttons. See them?
These little gems can be extremely useful.
The top and bottom buttons (double up and down arrows) are for moving one object up or down. Notice, I used the word "object" and not page. No, it's not a slip of the tongue, or in this case the fingers.
The middle button (the dot) is called the Select Browse Object button. It allows you to select what items or objects the double up and down arrows jump to. For example, if you set the button to Graphic, the up and down arrows will jump from graphic to graphic regardless of how many pages are between each graphic.
To see your choices click on the Select Browse Object button. You should see a small palette of choices appear.
Select something from the palette that will aid you with your editing. The name of the icon will appear in the gray box along the bottom as you run the mouse pointer over each icon. (I tend to use either Browse by Page or Browse by Section but you need to choose whatever will help you the most.)
Once you've made a choice the up and down arrows are immediately ready to jump from object to object with the word object now being defined by the item you chose.
Keep in mind that you can change this setting whenever you wish, so put it to good use.

It's helpful to use this mode when you are having problems with your PC. For example, maybe you just installed an awesome new video card, but in all the excitement loaded the wrong driver for it. This in turn caused your video display under windows to be non-existant. If you go into Safe mode, you can fix it.
I also use it to help find problems with programs. If I get lots of "illegal operation" messages, I try running the program in safe mode to see if the program itself is the problem. If the program runs fine in safe mode, I can assume I have another program or driver that's interfering with the program's operation and causing the error. (Note that not all software runs in Safe mode - especially more robust programs, but it's still worth a shot).

Before I begin with that, I just want to fill in anyone else who has not heard about this yet. You can certainly go back and read yesterday's quick tip for the whole scoop, but just briefly, the Trojan Flooder is a threat that is affecting a lot of the AVG antivirus users. They are being tricked into "healing" their computer for the good, but are ending up with a harmful exploit on their computer instead.
If you are an AVG user and have come in contact with this Trojan, it is extremely important to fix it right away. So, here are a couple of suggestions that I was able to find for this. Hopefully, at least one of them will work for you.
1.) First, boot your computer in the Safe Mode form. To do this, turn your computer off and then restart it while pressing the F8 key continuously until the Safe Mode startup menu appears. From there, choose Windows in Safe Mode.
Next, you're going to uninstall your AVG service. Go to Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. Find its applet and click the Remove button. When that's done, restart your computer and then reinstall the AVG program and do an immediate update on it. That should take care of the Trojan and all of its components. If not, try the second suggestion below.
2.) Again, boot up your computer in the Safe Mode form. (Follow the same directions listed above to do this). Once there, choose Windows in Safe Mode.
From there, go and find the folder of C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\. (Double click on the My Computer icon on your desktop, double click the C: drive and continue from there). Next, you'll need to find a couple of files. Change them as follows:
Change AVGCLEAN.SYS to AVGCLEAN.SY_ and change AVGRSXP.SYS to AVGRSXP.SY_. This will help keep the winlogon.exe file in place like it should be.
Now, the next part involves using the Registry Editor. There is always a risk with working in the Registry. If you make a mistake, it could alter other parts of your computer, so if you're not 100 percent sure you know what you're doing, please find someone who does. It's very important!
When you're ready, go to Start, Run, type in "regedit" and click OK. Once there, find the registry key of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AvgClean. Now, go and remove the "__delete" value from the right window pane. Then restart your computer back in the normal Windows mode.
You should also make sure you update your AVG service to fulfill the latest virus base version. To do that, open the AVG program or the AVG Control Center. Then press F9 to get the current updates. Once you're all set with that, you have to go back and rename the same files you changed earlier. Find the C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\ folder again and change the following files.
Change AVGCLEAN.SY_ back to AVGCLEAN.SYS and change AVGRSXP.SY_ back to AVGRSXP.SYS.
Once you have that done, you need to restart your computer again and then just make sure the AVG Resident shield loads again. This will keep you the safest. Well, there you go. Hopefully one of those suggestions will work for you and you can be rid of the Trojan Flooder for good. You can't beat that!

OK, I know there are several ways to view the contents of your hard drive (normally drive "C" ), but here's one I stumbled upon the other day that I thought was kinda cool.
If you have Windows 95/98/ME...
1. First hit your Windows Key and the letter " R ." (The windows key is located between the ALT & CTRL keys - if you don't have a "windows" keyboard, you won't have this key and you'll need to click the Start button, Run to try this.)
2. You should now have the "Run" dialog box sitting in front of you. Now, type in a back slash (/) :
3. Enter and you should get a window with a list of all the stuff on your C: drive.
Again, there are other ways of getting to your C: drive quickly (like sticking a shortcut on your desktop by dragging the C: drive to it), but this was kinda neat so I thought I would pass it along.
For Windows XP...
1. Hit the Windows key and the letter R .
2. Type " C: " (without the quotation marks) instead of the backslash as stated above.
3. Hit Enter and voila! You should see the contents of your C: drive.

Title Bar Paths
Have you ever gotten a little lost while using " My Computer "? Before you get buried in another deep directory, tell Windows to show the full path in the title bar. I know, it doesn't sound all that profound, but it really comes in helpful. Here' how:
Open My Computer (or any folder) and click the Tools menu, Folder options .
Click the View tab and check the " Display full path in title bar " checkbox.
That's it, you're only a glance away from knowing where you're at in any directory structure. Here's a sample of what your title bar (now new and improved) should look like when your hunting around in your computer:

#1 If you have a log in password for your account, this can be used to protect folders from other users. Your hard drive must be formatted using NTFS (which it probably is unless you're dual booting with another operating system). Here's what to do...
Right-click the folder that you want to make private and choose "Properties" (or Alt+Double-click). Go to the "Sharing" tab and check the "Make this folder private" box.
Click Apply . If you do not have a password on your account, a box will pop up asking if you want to assign a password. This must be done if you want to make the folder private, so click Yes . You will need to use your password to log on to your computer from then on.
Type in a password then confirm it. Click the "Create Password" button then close the Password window.
Click OK in the Properties dialog box.
Now anyone else logged on to your computer can't access that file without knowing your password.
# 2 If the Folder is Zipped you can give it a unique password.
Just double-click the zipped folder. In the top menu select File then click "Add a Password".
Type a password into the Password box. Then again in the "Confirm Password" box.
Now, you are the only person who can access files in this folder. The folder can be opened allowing the files to be seen, but you are the only one who can access them.

Do you find it frustrating that when you forget to double click the button, it shuts off after just one paste?
Or, have you ever tried to interrupt the process of format painting by editing some text, only to find that the program has "forgotten" the formatting you intended to paint once you were back on track?
If any of this is bothersome for you, but you still like the idea of transferring just the formatting, I have an alternative to suggest.
Next time, instead of the Format Painter button, try Ctrl + Shift + C to copy the formatting.
Once the format is copied, use Ctrl + Shift + V on your highlighted text to complete the format paste.
The cool part is that you can go to multiple locations to paste and you can even do other tasks in between the pastes. And the program won't forget!

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEM Current Control Set ENUMPCI
and you will see a number of keys of the form "VEN_xxxx", where xxxx are strings like "1102&DEV_0004&SUBSYS_00011103&REV_04". Under each of these folders will be another folder with a long numerical name. Open each folder and look for the "DeviceDesc" which matches the hardware you are trying to install. Right Click on the "VEN_xxxx" for that device and select 'Permissions' and then tick "Allow" for "Full Control". Close Regedit and then continue with the installation of your device. I cannot guarantee it works for everyone, but although I swear by it after swearing at it (XP), it should help you if you ever had casual problem.

To shut down your computer from the command line, type "shutdown -s". This could be used in a batch file, for example. However, this does not shut down immediately - it gives a 30 second countdown. To see further options for the shutdown command, type "shutdown" at the command prompt and it will show you a list of options. You can even shut down another PC remotely! Logoff and restart are other options.
Here are some of the other flags you can use along with the another ussage example:
Usage: shutdown [-i -l -s -r -a] [-f] [-m \\computername] [-t xx] [-c "comment"] [-d up:xx:yy]
-i Display GUI interface, must be the first option
-l Log off (cannot be used with -m option)
-s Shutdown the computer
-r Shutdown and restart the computer
-a Abort a system shutdown
-m \\computername Remote computer to shutdown/restart/abort
-t xx Set timeout for shutdown to xx seconds
-c "comment" Shutdown comment (maximum of 127 characters)
-f Forces running applications to close without warning
-d [u][p]:xx:yy The reason code for the shutdown

Use active desktop to save memory used by wallpapers
0 Commented : Post by : PazSt_Ft2K At : 1:37 PM1. Right click on your desktop and select "properties", then select the "desktop" tab.
With this you can make interesting things, like using various small wallpapers, or even animated ones!! (you can select an animated .gif too!!). Simply select various images, and when you click OK, drag all them to its right location, and lock the content again.
Note: If you want to check the huge wallpaper windows makes, select a wallpaper the standard way, then browse to "C:\Documents and Settings\USER PROFILE\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft" (where USER PROFILE, is the profile you're using, i.e. Administrator). There should be a file called Wallpaper.bmp, open it and you'll see your cureent wallpaper.
