Windows XP uses the same font for desktop icons and Windows Explorer. If the font is too hard to read, you can change its size or the font itself with a few mouse clicks. Here's how to adjust the look of your system fonts.
Windows Explorer and My Computer display the same font that Windows XP uses for icon titles on your desktop: Tahoma, 8 point. If you want to change the font or font size used in Windows Explorer, follow these steps:
  1. Access the Display Properties dialog box by right-clicking the desktop and selecting the Properties command.
  2. Select the Appearance tab and click the Advanced button.
  3. Select Icon from the Item drop-down list.
  4. Use the Font drop-down arrow to select a font from the list.
  5. Click OK twice -- once to close the Advanced Appearance dialog box and once to close the Display Properties dialog box.

You can see the new font by launching Windows Explorer or My Computer. If you don't like what you see, repeat the steps and select a different font.

Note: This tip is for both Windows XP Home and Professional.

Possibly you have known the Deep Freeze program, A Frozen program the Program in Hardisk that will freeze setting and the configuration in System the computer Operation or Drive in Hardisk at the time of Deep Freeze in instal or was activated (Frozen) . The method his work by means of meng-copy and kept all the configurations of the available system in System Operasi. When the change in the configuration happened, whether because of being software that was new diinstal, or because of having the virus that entered, we remained me-restart the computer, and the configuration of the system returned to the situation originally.
So all the changes that were carried out after Deep Freeze in instal/active, both the installation and the data file in the computer that used Deep Freeze only was temporary/now. All that will be lost or uninstal when this computer in restart.
Briefly if your computer when his system was still clean, was not yet error, continued diinstall deep freeze this, and at one time was affected by the virus, Trojan and his friends. Then when the computer in restart, the computer will be berish came back like the condition originally gain to hard the disk that was given deep freeze.
File that was kept by us after in restart also will be lost?.. yes, if you kept him in Drive where you menginstall Deep Freeze, Lalu how we kept file...?, his Method we our Hardisk partition was Drive the place of the storage System the Operation and the place kept the data was separated by us so that we the Drive protection the place system because of the virus or the cause error worked in System, for example you install System the Operation in Drive C:\and Drive D: to keep the date.
To get your Deep Freeze Program could download here DOWNLOAD DEEP FREEZE
The Instalasinya method was easy, After you download the extract Deep Freezenya with winzip or winrar, continued double the clique file setup him (DeepFreeze2000XPSTD.exe). As the note, Deep freeze that was discussed by me was current to win 2000 and win XP, not to win98/Me.
If still has not dipartisi, the partition then with software partision magic. Drive C:\better only was filled up software the application, and Drive D:\or E:\to keep your date.
Then had the choice, drive whatever that will be frozen (deepfreeze), chose that C:\then. Because if all was chosen by you, then file-file your date that in D:\or E:\when you more or the fox, after in restart would again like ready the time. The virus also most attacked file the system in drive C:\, After the installation was finished, you were asked for restart the computer, and you afterwards will be faced with tampilan deep freeze when the computer was on wanted to enter windows. You were asked for to put password deep freeze. Gave password that only you personally that knew him. Because if not, definitely him the user will find it easy to was opened password you.
Password this useful to activate and deactivated deepfreeze. After that you will enter to windows, the sign if deep freeze has terinstall and active was, in systray windows you, emerged the icon deepfreeze (the Picture of the pole bear).
- Deep Freeze active in the Boot Frozen position (default after in install)
- Deep Freeze inactive in the position of Boot Thawed
To deactivate deep freeze, pressed the switch [SHIFT] in keyboard and double the clique of the icon deepfreeze in system tray windows you that was in the right corner lowest Then put password you , Then moved in the Boot Thawed position then restart PC you, to activated as the first step positioned Boot Frozen then restart PC you.

The virus has in this current world developed fast. The virus basically not something/the object that emerged automatically (like the flu virus, or the other illness virus). The virus basically same like the program/the application that we with everyday (Ms Word, Notepad, etc.). Only that distinguished his name was the characteristics from the application personally.
The program/the application of his characteristics was constructive, helped the person to carry out various works. The virus was his opposite that is destructive, disturbed the person who carried out his work or even damaged the computer personally. Antivirus not 100% could prevent/eliminated. Antivirus had the certain data about the certain virus that eventually will be killed by the function of the virus personally. Antivirus whatever, the make anything, vendor anything, Antivirus will not be useful.
Therefore was distributed by me tips about the method of preventing the virus, not eliminated the virus. For the local virus most indeed made use of the weakness from us. Used setting standard windows (was not changed-difference), you would damn it. Because they (the manufacturer of the virus) tended to look for the gap from setting windows you. His method was:
  1. Must know the extension file. The extension was the letter that was added to distinguish various kind sorts file. The example: Microsoft Word Document his extension .doc, Excel his extension .xls, File the text: .txt. What for? You will know eventually.
  2. Must change a little setting windows you. In the OS Windows XP Platform, tried to be opened by you Windows Explorer. The clique of the Tools menu > the Options Folder. Click Tab View. The Setting Menjadi difference like this: chose "Show hidden files and folders", eliminated the "Hide Extensions" cheque "for known file types". What for? You will know eventually.
  3. Remembered! They looked for our weakness, because we careless checked file that dicopy to drive we. Every time you wanted to open the document, file or the application, ascertained you knew that file that was really safe! One example, I had met file with icon (the picture in file) equally precisely like file Microsoft Word Document that with the extension .doc. But I was suspicious, evidently not .doc, but .exe (the application/the program). Still not was opened by me, direct I delete.Because if being opened, that meaning that file the virus has infected my computer. Evidently after several days/the week, there was the news if the virus has infected the government agency.
At least with tips this you will more be on the alert overcame the virus. Tended the local virus "cheated" you with icon that normally is in Windows, whether he menyamar was Ms Word Document, or JPEG File, or the other extension. Settingan in the number 2 helped you to be on the alert. The extension all file without excepting will be seen, you will more find it easy to monitor him.

Two FILE MANAGER

Pablo Commander

Pablo Commander that offered tampilan explorer with two sides. So, you could easily to do drag and provided file-file or put forward the contents from one site FTP and still many others maanfaat that was other.

Freeware and for OS: 98/Me/2000/XP.

The experience was the wisest teacher. Learn from the experience, we could extend the age of the monitor by wearing him wisely. The age of the monitor that more than three years were the quite old age. Possibly for people of the office complex, they have begun to make the budget replace his computer equipment. However for that berkocek barely adequate, we necessary mensiasati him by several tips. Tips-tips below this possibly could be tried by you:

1. out the cable power supply the computer or the monitor from stopping contact

Should not forget, if we have been finished used the computer, immediately turn off the switch ounce/off the monitor and pulled also out the cable that connected the computer or the monitor by stopping contact. Therefore, there was not again the electricity current that will enter our computer.

2. was deadly that the monitor when the computer was idle

Occasionally, we were doing something that must be waiting long spt : defrag/download file yg old, etc..Than waited for the process to be finished, better we went out for a moment around 30 minutes and turn off also your monitor.

3. monitor that was in the air-conditioned room

For us who used the computer in the air-conditioned room, really lucky, because AC could cool down electronics components in the computer and the monitor. But, must be seen, the position of your monitor exact was below AC? When yes, did not have the drop of water AC that dripped to the monitor.Be careful, short circuit relations could happen if being affected by water.

4. monitor that was in the room was not air-conditioned

Confirmed that this room had the air current, like the window or the sufficient wind hole. Also might add the small fan on the monitor that hot air immediately leaves monitor equipment kit.

5. Clean the minimal monitor a week verymuch

Was enough with kemoceng, we fan-ward off to clean dusts that adhered. If having spare time, cleaned with cloth and the special cleaner computer equipment.

Cleaned Virus

The virus will always become the spectre while we were still having the computer. So this incident definitely often will be encountered by us in and around us. Continued from my article that was previous “Virus Lokal that Naughty“. Every time went out the new kind virus characteristically the virus was somewhat different, initially must make was busy and could gempar. ran there-here to look for this virus charm.
Cleaned the virus could be risky towards our system of the computer operation in fact until must menginstal repeated our computer all. Methods of eliminating the virus from our computer sometimes were different between one virus and the other virus. However along with this will be given by me methods cleaned the virus generally.
The method cleaned virus

Ascertain you have had backed up the data (although being infected by the virus) this to guard-guarded when the process of the cleaning of your virus even your data took part in vanishing/was lost. And ascertained you have had emergency boot your system disk.
  • Search knew the virus what attacked your computer.

    1. Instal the program anti the virus if in your computer not yet terinstal antivirus. Search antivirus that according to was good and effective for the virus kind that attacked. (how good it is to search tau and read repeatedly about the virus and antivirus him)

    2. Ascertain the virus definition that most Up date. Search in the internet from webs site the manufacturer anti this virus.

    3. Try to get setingan antivirus in mode only detected then. It would be better if immediately should not remove file that was infected by the virus, occasionally was file system that was infected, and file this was used by OS to go. If file this vanished or quarantine tar could menyebakan the chaotic system or even not the road.

    4. Scan the virus but don't remove him before. The note: several viruses could stop the program anti the virus that was going in the computer. For this case could be deceived with men-scan this computer through the network, by means of share drive that would in scan. The last method was with released harddisk and in the pair in the computer that will be used to men-scan him.
Study the virus that infected your computer and the method removed him. Many web site that provided this information. Like Symantec security response site the example that provided information about the virus and the method cleaned a certain virus.
  • Be lost the virus
  1. Several viruses had tool removal special to clean him.If this virus had tool removal special download and used tool this.
  2. If being not gotten tool removal, studied and carried out the cleaning method manually in accordance with the instruction for this virus kind. You possibly must remove manually file the virus and edited registry certain. The guidance of the abolition that was received from the source was believed will guide you to do the step for the sake of the step for the cleaning of this virus.
  3. If having the guidance to use scanning from the program antivirus to clean the certain virus, afterwards did with men-scan with the configuration to remove (delete or quarantine) this virus.

When you liked replaced harddisk, not necessarily harddisk this in accordance with hardware that was used by you. For example us had harddisk his capacity 40 GB, but after being seen only was known 32 GB and we were definitely unfortunate 8 GB, love not!
Before his implementation, was carried out by you before backed up your data to some harddisk other or in the diskette.

The method overcame concerning this was as follows:

1. Search or download the program DiscWizard that must be free or if seagate in website www.seagate.com.
2. Put harddik that 40 GB (double harddisk) to the available computer DiscWizzard him, activated through the diskette.
3. Activated DiscWizzard and did zero file drive (meaning that all the datas will be lost) and harddisk came back the situation all.
4. Put the CARTON menu by using the DOS Menu or in from Windows 98 under us the data undertook DOS.
5. Carry out the FDISK order by means of as usual (made the partition).
6. When being convinced, carried out the Format on Respectively the partition. When not yet, did once more Zero file drive
7. When you the user Windows 98, used Windows Second Edition.

Why wrong the detection could happen, because indeed the BIOS capacity your computer that could not. If used Pentium III above, indeed did not have the problem.

Increasingly the increase in the use flash the disk, made the manufacturer of the virus shift his target to the storage media that simple this, not only invested the virus but also the effect that was produced was of various types, one of them the available contents in flash the disk, like file or the folder was hidden (Hidden). How the method dealt with this case?, please followed steps below this.
Eliminated virus
The First step
  1. Confirmed antivirus update
  2. Put flash the disk to PC or Laptop
  3. Don't opened the box of the dialogue that emerged when flash the disk was put into PC or laptop.
The step Secondly
  1. Be opened windows Explorer or My Computer
  2. The right clique mouse in the position drive flash the disk, usually F:
  3. Afterwards chose scan the appropriate virus anti the virus that was used (“Remembered”, make accustomed antivirus update).

Returned data

After the virus really was lost from flash the disk, now during him returns the data that was hidden (Hidden).

Along with his steps:

1. Open Command Prompt, could by means of clicking StartRun- typed cmd or command (for Windows 98/ME).

2. After being open the window command prompt, afterwards typed attrib -h -r -s -a/s/d f: (with the note was in drive C, for example; C:\Documents and Settings\Papa > attrib -h -r -s -a/s/d f:)

3. Then after this order Typed would, afterwards enter.

4. If the step no.2 was not successful, was moved by you his position from drive C to drive flash the disk (usually F), to move the position drive, followed the step along with, if the position flash the disk in the computer or laptop was in drive F, then (for example); C:\Documents and Settings\Papa > F: afterwards enter then will move to drive F:\>

5. After was in the position drive flash the disk afterwards typed the order that was the same as the step no.2, but to f: that was behind was eliminated, for example: F:\> attrib -h -r -s -a/s/d, afterwards enter.

6. After this process, now tries the folder cheque or file available in flash the disk.

Anti Virus PCMAV and ClamAv for a long time has co-operated in eradicating the good virus the local virus and the outside virus.

PC the Media dismissed Anti the newest Virus that is PCMAV RC 17 that has known 900 virus kinds that some lokal… was increased from Anti the Virus ClamAV knew the virus to improve to tens of thousands... As file from ClamAV must be made one in one folder with PCMAV him... In one folder must be file:
1. PCMAV cleaner
2. PCMAV RTP
3. libpclamav.dll
4. main.cvd
5. daily.cvd
After all file that above has been just made one folder if wanting to be successful, when being undertaken by you cleaner or RTP him during the first time definitely he would loading clamav database him.

I the love file libpclamav.dll previously... the click link low This

To main.cvd and daily.cvd you download personally from website him clamav
http://www.clamav.net

in his first page you must encounter file download him, because file download him every day in update continued.

PC Performance

A well-configured PC by itself offers great performance. The key here lies in the choice of the components and their arrangement.

Choice of CPU: Because ordinary people do not know much about computers, they simply buy one that has an Intel processor. More discerning buyers get PCs with AMD processors. Benchmark tests by prominent computer magazines and websites have shown that AMD Athlon processors score over Intel Pentium processors. Unlike Intel CPUs, AMD processors natively support both 32-bit and 64-bit software. AMD processors consume less power and consequently generate less heat. Hence, they do not require huge noisy fans. AMD is also a much better consumer-friendly company. It has been contributing to the development of open standards, which results in cheaper PC components. Intel, on the contrary, had tried to impose proprietary products like the RD-RAM memory technology, which was developed by its subsidiary Rambus. The biggest argument for AMD processors is the cost. AMD CPUs are always cheaper than Intel's. Remember, it is always the consumer who ultimately pays for the advertising and marketing expenses.

Choice of Motherboard: Thanks to the HyperTransport technology developed by AMD, motherboards of their CPUs are at a level higher than than Intel motherboards. Intel motherboard still use the obsolete front-side bus (FSB) technology to provide a connection between the CPU and the RAM (memory) modules. In the AMD platform, the CPU has an integrated memory controller which directly accesses the memory modules. Hence, memory operations are not bottlenecked by the FSB. Also, motherboard chipsets for AMD processors are being made by many third-party vendors (like VIA, nVidia, and ATI) who add their own expertise and performance increments to the motherboards. Intel jealously guards the chipset market for their CPUs and hence all innovations have to come from Intel.

IDE Drives Setup: Most motherboards have to IDE connectors allowing you to connect up to four IDE devices (hard disks and CD/DVD drives). Each connector can connect to two IDE devices in a master/slave combination. If you have just two devices, say a hard disk and a CD drive, connect them separately to the two IDE connectors. If you have a CD drive and CD-RW drive, connect them both to an IDE connection with the CD writer as the master and the CD drive as the slave.

Autostart CDs: To prevent a CD from autostarting when it is inserted, hold down the Shift key until Windows Explorer recognises the disk. Use Xteq X-Setup or TweakUI to permanently disable autostart behavior for CD/DVD drives.

Power Supply and Cabinet: PC components like the CPU and the graphic card consume a lot of power. So, make sure your PC cabinet has a power supply rated at a minimum of 350W. Also, make sure the cabinet has provisions for two extra fans (one in the front and one in the back). The power supply comes with a fan, which also tries to takes some hot air off the CPU through a grill placed just above the CPU. This grill needs to properly spaced out, be big enough and ideally located to provide effective cooling. Almost all PC cabinets today support the ATX standard, which will allow software to shut the PC down. In Windows 9x/Me/2000/XP, select Enable hibernation under the Hibernate tab of the Power Options applet in Control Panel. A new Hibernate option will now be available in the Shutdown Windows menu.

COM Ports: If you use a serial mouse, then connect it to the COM1 port as this is the first port that the OS checks when it is looking for a mouse. You can connect your dialup modem to COM2.

CNR Port: This port (known as Audio Modem Riser or AMR in older motherboards) can be used to add a specially made low-cost peripheral replacement. The replacement is far cheaper than a separate sound card or modem.

Fans: If your cabinet allows it, install additional fans for extra cooling.

Dust: Remove dust regularly from the insides of your cabinet and prevent them from forming a coating over the motherboard and other parts.

Driver updates: Manufacturers of PC components release new driver updates to fix problems associated with their products. Check their websites for these releases and keep your machine updated.

Steps to bring pictures into Power Point.

1. Get a picture file from the net or a camera, save it to disk, and remember its location. (You can save pictures that you see in netscape by right clicking the pictures and selecting "Save Image As..")
2. Go to the slide in your presentation that you wish the picture to be in.
3. In Power Point click Insert -> Picture -> From File...
4. A dialog box will come up called "Insert Picture"
5. You must use the "Look in:" drop box to select the drive/dir that your file is in. Then select the image that you saved to disk earlier and click the "Insert" button.

The picture should now be in your Power Point slide.

Steps to add a special effect to the picture.

1. Right click the picture and select "Custom Animation..."
2. In the "Entry animation and sound" section you can select the animation that you would like your picture to perform. Chose one then click the Timing tab.
3. Make sure that your picture is still selected in the "Animation order" box.
4. The most common setting for Timing is to have the Animate and Automatically selected in the "Start animation" section.
5. select how many seconds delay you want, click OK, and it should be ready to go.

The first page will have you copy the files from the LAN and store them in the correct folder on your hard drive. The second page will tell you how to setup an icon in Word and in Excel so that when clicked it will put the current path of the file in the footer of the current document that you are working on.

Print this page now…
You should now be working from a paper copy of this tip.

Microsoft Windows XP usually shows icons for folders like My Music and My Pictures. If a folder contains pictures, Windows XP displays random thumbnails from within the folder. You can replace these icons with custom pictures to make browsing your files more fun, and to make it easier for children to find and open files.

Note: Your picture is visible only when you're browsing folders with the Thumbnails view. To access the Thumbnails view, click Thumbnails on the View menu.

To add a picture to a folder

1. In Windows Explorer (the program that appears when you open folders such as My Computer, My Documents, My Pictures, or My Music), right-click the folder you want to add a picture to, and then click Properties.

2. In the Properties dialog box, click the Customize tab. If there is no Customize tab, you cannot add a picture to that folder. You can add pictures to other folders, however.

As you can see, Windows Vista has shortened the list of options and grouped some into one section. Under the Hardware and sounds section, you can see all your hardware such as your printer, keyboard, and mouse. Under Programs, you can install and uninstall programs. On User Accounts and Family Safety, you can add new users and set up parent control and other safety settings. The ease of Access section lets you customize settings as well as contain the speech recognition feature. And the Additional options contain the antivirus programs of the computer and other valuable information. Lesser sections but more features, better computer experience.

Would you like to see the Blue Screen of Death on your Windows XP? You are probably asking why on earth would you want to see one. Well, it can be useful in testing your Startup and Recovery Settings. And it may be considered fun by some. It is actually possible and quite harmless as long as you are quite adept in using the registry. How to do it?
1. Click on the Start button, then Run.
2. Enter in regedit on the window to open the Registry Editor.
3. Find the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\i8042prt\parameters.
4. Click on Edit, then New, then DWORD Value.
5. A new value will appear. Label this value CrashonCtrlScroll exactly as seen.
6. Make a double click on the new DWORD value created and place 1 on the Value data.
7. Click on OK then close the Registry Editor.
8. Restart your computer and log in.
9. To produce that Blue Screen of Death, press and hold down the Ctrl key while pressing the Scroll Lock key twice fast.
10. The Blue Screen of Death will then appear on screen.

When doing this, just make sure that any work that you are doing is saved and closed because the system will lock up and restart after the BSOD.

Microsoft has a tool for people to see if your Windows XP-based PC can run Windows Vista: the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor RC.

This small software tool will scan your computer and create an easy-to-understand report of all known system, device, and program compatibility issues, and recommend ways to resolve them. Upgrade Advisor can also help you choose the edition of Windows Vista that best fits the way you want to use your computer.

Note: This software isn’t final, so the results you get may not be 100% accurate. Make sure you run Upgrade Advisor again in a few months for a more accurate assessment and to get the latest up-to-date information about whether your system is ready for an upgrade.

Before you begin
Before you run the Upgrade Advisor, be sure to plug in any USB or other attachable peripheral devices (such as printers, external hard drives, or scanners) that are regularly used with the PC that you're evaluating.

Finally happy with Vista, and want to remove the old XP from your system? A few changes to the boot loader have been made in vista, but the steps are very similar.

not too difficult, simply load into Vista and format the partition XP is currently installed on. Since the Vista bootloader has control of the boot, there is no need to modify the boot.ini of XP.

Restart your computer with either Vista CD 1 or your Vista DVD in the drive, if you don't you will be prompted to pick an operating system. Once into setup, choose repair console from the first screen (not install).

Now the last option is for a DOS prompt, pick that.

A DOS prompt appears, and type the following:
bootrec.exe /fixmbr
*this will essentially remove XP from the Vista bootloader

bootrec.exe /fixboot
*this will check that XP is no longer present in Vista's boot.ini

Restart and XP is history.

Antivirus software is a crucial component to any computer, whether you are connected to the internet or not you are still vulnerable to harmful software which can cripple your computer which is why many computers you purchase comes with antivirus software pre-loaded.

Antivirus software is software specifically created to identify and eliminate computer viruses and other malicious software. Antivirus software accomplishes this by using 2 different methods, it either scans files and folders on the target computer to look for known viruses, or it monitors the computer, looking for any suspicious activity from any computer program, and monitors ports on the computer.

Antivirus software has a dictionary with known viruses listed there, which is why it is important to update your software online as often as you can, as threats are identified every day. Once a file has been corrupted with a known virus, the antivirus software either attempts to repair the file by removing the virus form the program, quarantines the file so that a file that cannot be repaired is moved to a location in which the virus cannot spread or it will delete the infected file.

This is why antivirus software is especially important for businesses, it can be quite damaging to a company to have a important document infected and forced to delete it as to prevent further spreading of viruses. Certain antivirus software also scans for and removes adware, software installed onto your computer without you knowing while browsing the internet which sends information about the websites you visit to marketing companies, which will then target you for advertising and spam emails.

Millions of harmful software programs have been created targeting the unwary user, and this can leave your business or home vulnerable to prying eyes and unwanted frustration, antivirus software is the answer to all you problems, and the best part of it is that there are so many free antivirus software out there to get, you have no reason why not to be protected by one of them.

To perform a reinstallation of Windows XP, sometimes called a repair installation follow the steps below:

First configure your computer (Bios settings) to start from the CD-ROM drive.

Insert your Windows XP Setup CD, and restart your computer.

When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen. Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.

In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement. Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.

Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

Here's the picture: you're working on the ultimate document, it's a masterpiece! Too bad the masterpiece is also a nightmare. It's easily the longest document you've ever edited and the navigation through all those pages is a huge headache. (Not to mention the back and forth, back and forth between the keyboard and the mouse.) Help!

Never fear, help is on the way. While these shortcuts won't make your document shorter, they will help to ease the pain as you try to navigate—hopefully without the need for aspirin.

Let's begin with some basic keyboard shortcuts:

  • Arrow keys = moves one space or line in the arrow direction.
  • Ctrl + Left or Right arrow = moves the cursor one word left or right.
  • Home = moves the cursor to the beginning of the current line.
  • Ctrl + Home = moves the cursor to the top of the document.
  • End = moves the cursor to the end of the current line.
  • Ctrl + End = moves the cursor to the bottom of the document.
  • Page Up = moves the cursor up the length of one screen.
  • Page Down = moves the cursor down the length of one screen.
  • Ctrl + Page Up = moves the cursor to the previous page in your document.
  • Ctrl + Page Down = moves the cursor to the next page down in your document.

Now here are a few tidbits for document navigation with the mouse on the vertical scroll bar.

The first and easiest is to realize that when you click and hold on the scroll box a text box will appear which tells you what page you're scrolling to and the section title which begins the page. This is really helpful in a very long document—it keeps you from playing the guessing game about where you are with the scroll button. (It cuts down on the "Oops! I went too far" problem.)

Below the scroll bar, you'll find a series of three buttons. See them?

These little gems can be extremely useful.

The top and bottom buttons (double up and down arrows) are for moving one object up or down. Notice, I used the word "object" and not page. No, it's not a slip of the tongue, or in this case the fingers.

The middle button (the dot) is called the Select Browse Object button. It allows you to select what items or objects the double up and down arrows jump to. For example, if you set the button to Graphic, the up and down arrows will jump from graphic to graphic regardless of how many pages are between each graphic.

To see your choices click on the Select Browse Object button. You should see a small palette of choices appear.

Select something from the palette that will aid you with your editing. The name of the icon will appear in the gray box along the bottom as you run the mouse pointer over each icon. (I tend to use either Browse by Page or Browse by Section but you need to choose whatever will help you the most.)

Once you've made a choice the up and down arrows are immediately ready to jump from object to object with the word object now being defined by the item you chose.

Keep in mind that you can change this setting whenever you wish, so put it to good use.

Well, there's a pretty good list of items to learn. Give them a try—they're such small things that add up to a lot of saved time when used regularly. I don't know about you but I'm always looking to save time

What is "Safe Mode"

Safe mode is a Windows maintenance mode where only the bare minimum of drivers are loaded. You don't have access to CD ROMs, printers, or other non-essential devices.

It's helpful to use this mode when you are having problems with your PC. For example, maybe you just installed an awesome new video card, but in all the excitement loaded the wrong driver for it. This in turn caused your video display under windows to be non-existant. If you go into Safe mode, you can fix it.

I also use it to help find problems with programs. If I get lots of "illegal operation" messages, I try running the program in safe mode to see if the program itself is the problem. If the program runs fine in safe mode, I can assume I have another program or driver that's interfering with the program's operation and causing the error. (Note that not all software runs in Safe mode - especially more robust programs, but it's still worth a shot).

To get to Safe mode, press the F8 key when Windows starts to boot. You have to do this BEFORE you see the first "Windows" screen. I start tapping away at mine when as soon as I get by the BIOS startup screen or the manufacturer's splash screen. Experiment and you'll get it.

Trojan flooder fix

There sure is and I'm glad you asked. It was only yesterday that I shared the news with all of you about the Trojan Flooder.AKE risk (see yesterday's quick tip) and already, several of you have e-mailed me, asking me how you can fix it. I had planned on following up with this information, but now I know there is a great need for it, so I won't waste any more time!

Before I begin with that, I just want to fill in anyone else who has not heard about this yet. You can certainly go back and read yesterday's quick tip for the whole scoop, but just briefly, the Trojan Flooder is a threat that is affecting a lot of the AVG antivirus users. They are being tricked into "healing" their computer for the good, but are ending up with a harmful exploit on their computer instead.

If you are an AVG user and have come in contact with this Trojan, it is extremely important to fix it right away. So, here are a couple of suggestions that I was able to find for this. Hopefully, at least one of them will work for you.

1.) First, boot your computer in the Safe Mode form. To do this, turn your computer off and then restart it while pressing the F8 key continuously until the Safe Mode startup menu appears. From there, choose Windows in Safe Mode.

Next, you're going to uninstall your AVG service. Go to Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. Find its applet and click the Remove button. When that's done, restart your computer and then reinstall the AVG program and do an immediate update on it. That should take care of the Trojan and all of its components. If not, try the second suggestion below.

2.) Again, boot up your computer in the Safe Mode form. (Follow the same directions listed above to do this). Once there, choose Windows in Safe Mode.

From there, go and find the folder of C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\. (Double click on the My Computer icon on your desktop, double click the C: drive and continue from there). Next, you'll need to find a couple of files. Change them as follows:

Change AVGCLEAN.SYS to AVGCLEAN.SY_ and change AVGRSXP.SYS to AVGRSXP.SY_. This will help keep the winlogon.exe file in place like it should be.

Now, the next part involves using the Registry Editor. There is always a risk with working in the Registry. If you make a mistake, it could alter other parts of your computer, so if you're not 100 percent sure you know what you're doing, please find someone who does. It's very important!

When you're ready, go to Start, Run, type in "regedit" and click OK. Once there, find the registry key of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AvgClean. Now, go and remove the "__delete" value from the right window pane. Then restart your computer back in the normal Windows mode.

You should also make sure you update your AVG service to fulfill the latest virus base version. To do that, open the AVG program or the AVG Control Center. Then press F9 to get the current updates. Once you're all set with that, you have to go back and rename the same files you changed earlier. Find the C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\ folder again and change the following files.

Change AVGCLEAN.SY_ back to AVGCLEAN.SYS and change AVGRSXP.SY_ back to AVGRSXP.SYS.

Once you have that done, you need to restart your computer again and then just make sure the AVG Resident shield loads again. This will keep you the safest. Well, there you go. Hopefully one of those suggestions will work for you and you can be rid of the Trojan Flooder for good. You can't beat that!

OK, I know there are several ways to view the contents of your hard drive (normally drive "C" ), but here's one I stumbled upon the other day that I thought was kinda cool.

If you have Windows 95/98/ME...

1. First hit your Windows Key and the letter " R ." (The windows key is located between the ALT & CTRL keys - if you don't have a "windows" keyboard, you won't have this key and you'll need to click the Start button, Run to try this.)

2. You should now have the "Run" dialog box sitting in front of you. Now, type in a back slash (/) :

3. Enter and you should get a window with a list of all the stuff on your C: drive.

Again, there are other ways of getting to your C: drive quickly (like sticking a shortcut on your desktop by dragging the C: drive to it), but this was kinda neat so I thought I would pass it along.

For Windows XP...

1. Hit the Windows key and the letter R .

2. Type " C: " (without the quotation marks) instead of the backslash as stated above.

3. Hit Enter and voila! You should see the contents of your C: drive.

Sure, there are lots of other ways to see what's on your C: drive, but can you think of one that makes you look as cool?

Full Path

Title Bar Paths

Have you ever gotten a little lost while using " My Computer "? Before you get buried in another deep directory, tell Windows to show the full path in the title bar. I know, it doesn't sound all that profound, but it really comes in helpful. Here' how:

Open My Computer (or any folder) and click the Tools menu, Folder options .

Click the View tab and check the " Display full path in title bar " checkbox.

That's it, you're only a glance away from knowing where you're at in any directory structure. Here's a sample of what your title bar (now new and improved) should look like when your hunting around in your computer:

Do you share a computer with other users and want some extra security on your folders? There are two ways to password protect a folder built into Windows XP (for other Windows flavors, there are some freeware/shareware programs out there).

#1 If you have a log in password for your account, this can be used to protect folders from other users. Your hard drive must be formatted using NTFS (which it probably is unless you're dual booting with another operating system). Here's what to do...

Right-click the folder that you want to make private and choose "Properties" (or Alt+Double-click). Go to the "Sharing" tab and check the "Make this folder private" box.

Click Apply . If you do not have a password on your account, a box will pop up asking if you want to assign a password. This must be done if you want to make the folder private, so click Yes . You will need to use your password to log on to your computer from then on.

Type in a password then confirm it. Click the "Create Password" button then close the Password window.

Click OK in the Properties dialog box.

Now anyone else logged on to your computer can't access that file without knowing your password.

# 2 If the Folder is Zipped you can give it a unique password.

Just double-click the zipped folder. In the top menu select File then click "Add a Password".

Type a password into the Password box. Then again in the "Confirm Password" box.

Now, you are the only person who can access files in this folder. The folder can be opened allowing the files to be seen, but you are the only one who can access them.

Do you like the Format Painter in MS Word and MS PowerPoint?

Do you find it frustrating that when you forget to double click the button, it shuts off after just one paste?

Or, have you ever tried to interrupt the process of format painting by editing some text, only to find that the program has "forgotten" the formatting you intended to paint once you were back on track?

If any of this is bothersome for you, but you still like the idea of transferring just the formatting, I have an alternative to suggest.

Next time, instead of the Format Painter button, try Ctrl + Shift + C to copy the formatting.

Once the format is copied, use Ctrl + Shift + V on your highlighted text to complete the format paste.

The cool part is that you can go to multiple locations to paste and you can even do other tasks in between the pastes. And the program won't forget!

This is a fix for if you ever had a "data invalid" problem that nags you while you were installing and swapping out cards with Windows XP. This error appears to be due to a protection problem in the Windows registry and can occur with a variety of drivers (sound cards and SCSI drivers have been reported). To fix this problem, go to Start, Run... and type "regedit" without the quotes to run the Registry Editor.
Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEM Current Control Set ENUMPCI
and you will see a number of keys of the form "VEN_xxxx", where xxxx are strings like "1102&DEV_0004&SUBSYS_00011103&REV_04". Under each of these folders will be another folder with a long numerical name. Open each folder and look for the "DeviceDesc" which matches the hardware you are trying to install. Right Click on the "VEN_xxxx" for that device and select 'Permissions' and then tick "Allow" for "Full Control". Close Regedit and then continue with the installation of your device. I cannot guarantee it works for everyone, but although I swear by it after swearing at it (XP), it should help you if you ever had casual problem.

Shutdown XP faster 2

Like previous versions of windows, it takes long time to restart or shutdown windows xp when the "Exit Windows" sound is enabled. to solve this problem you must disable this useless sound.

click start button then go to settings -> control panel -> Sound,Speech and Audio devices -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Sounds, then under program events and windows menu click on "Exit Windows" sub-menu and highlight it.
Now from sounds you can select, choose "none" and then click apply and ok.now you can see some improvements when shutting down your system.

Shutdown XP Faster

When a user shuts down Windows XP, first the system has to kill all services currently running. Every once in a while the service does not shut down instantly and windows gives it a change to shut down on its own before it kills it.
This amount of time that windows waits is stored in the system registry. If you modify this setting, then windows will kill the service earlier.
To modify the setting, follow the directions below:

Start Regedit.
Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control.
Click on the "Control" Folder. Select "Wait To Kill Service Timeout" Right click on it and select Modify.
to be continue ... Shutdown XP Faster 2

This tweak explains alternative ways of shutting down your PC and more options for shutting down.

To shut down your computer from the command line, type "shutdown -s". This could be used in a batch file, for example. However, this does not shut down immediately - it gives a 30 second countdown. To see further options for the shutdown command, type "shutdown" at the command prompt and it will show you a list of options. You can even shut down another PC remotely! Logoff and restart are other options.

Here are some of the other flags you can use along with the another ussage example:

Usage: shutdown [-i -l -s -r -a] [-f] [-m \\computername] [-t xx] [-c "comment"] [-d up:xx:yy]
-i Display GUI interface, must be the first option
-l Log off (cannot be used with -m option)
-s Shutdown the computer
-r Shutdown and restart the computer
-a Abort a system shutdown
-m \\computername Remote computer to shutdown/restart/abort
-t xx Set timeout for shutdown to xx seconds
-c "comment" Shutdown comment (maximum of 127 characters)
-f Forces running applications to close without warning
-d [u][p]:xx:yy The reason code for the shutdown
u is the user code
p is a planned shutdown code
xx is the major reason code (positive integer less than 256)
yy is the minor reason code (positive integer less than 65536)

When you choose a wallpaper using the standard method (selecting a background on the desktop tab, in the properties window), Windows converts this image to a huge .bmp file (even if you selected a .jpg). Then instead of having a nice 220K wallpaper, you get a 3,15MB wallpaper. To get rid of this, try using active desktop's web capabilities, like this:

1. Right click on your desktop and select "properties", then select the "desktop" tab.
2. Click on "Customize Desktop".
3. Select the "Web" tab and click on "New..."
4. Browse for your favorite image and click OK when you are done.
5. Make sure "Lock desktop items" is uncheck.
6. Click OK, and OK again.
7. Now your image is like another window. Drag it to where you want and then right clik over it.
8. Select "arrange icons by" and the check "Lock Web Items on Desktop".
9. That's it. Now you have a "low memory usage wallpaper".

With this you can make interesting things, like using various small wallpapers, or even animated ones!! (you can select an animated .gif too!!). Simply select various images, and when you click OK, drag all them to its right location, and lock the content again.

Note: If you want to check the huge wallpaper windows makes, select a wallpaper the standard way, then browse to "C:\Documents and Settings\USER PROFILE\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft" (where USER PROFILE, is the profile you're using, i.e. Administrator). There should be a file called Wallpaper.bmp, open it and you'll see your cureent wallpaper.

This tweak enables XP to turn off your computer automatically at shutdown.
1. Goto /Start/Control Panel/Performance and Maintenance/System.
2. Select the Hardware tab and then select Device Manager.
3. Under the 'View' menu select Show Hidden Devices. Double click NT/Apm/Legacy
Interface Node and enable device. De-select show hidden devices again and re-boot.
Now your PC will shutdown automatically just like good old Windows 98.
